You speak of a core problem which is unaddressed by legalism. I think legalism is popular because it limits our responsibilities to what can be observed. Rather Jesus has called us to be born again, to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit and to bear the fruit of that Spirit. No one can observe what goes on inside another, thus we are not entitled to judge anyone. But people want to be sure that they are right, r at least on the right side which means other people must be wrong: it’s easier to accuse someone else of being wrong, than for me to do what is right. The unaddressed issue is sin nature within the believer masking itself as righteousness, willing to argue to prove that they are right and you are wrong, when Jesus didn’t come to argue but to free people from enslavement to sin. First cast the plank out of your own eye, then you will see clearly to help the other remove the speck from his eye. That’s why I don’t understand why Bible-believing Christians are so intolerant toward homosexuals and Lesbians; as Jesus said let him who is without sin throw the first stone. also in the book of James, James says that breaking any is breaking the Law, that is, it is an offense against God. Therefore be merciful to others, because you rely on God’s mercy. maybe it’s our flesh that wants to think that the sin we don’t commit is worse than the one we do. How can we show God’s unconditional love in Christ if we demand that people turn from their sin before we will let them into community?
